They hit my house when delivering dirt and did not help resolve the damage. When I mentioned that the dirt delivery hit my house my friends said “oh no you hired Powell!” Apparently this company is well known for hitting peoples property. BEWARE

I read reviews of business that I’m interested in doing business with. Though I’ve only done business with this company once, in which I went to pick up the soil and had no issues I do see it as a red flag 🚩 when a business only responds to positive reviews of their business. I’ve seen some serious damages to a property and some other not so positive reviews but Powell & Son LLC seems to only respond to reviews that are positive. To me, that says a lot about a business and the people who run them.
This is a native human “ black “ owned business from my understanding & I love supporting native businesses so it’s always disappointing to see when they don’t address customers issues with the service or product they purchased.
Definitely not a good look so I would suggest that people be cautious if you’re thinking of doing business with Powell & Son. If for any unfortunate reason that you may have an issue with their company, based on the reviews you will not receive any or too much assistance from them with your issues. I literally was hoping to place an order for delivery today until I read some of those negative reviews and the company not responding to them but responded to positive reviews. That’s a pause and red flag 🚩.

My employer Project Healthy Community has ordered from Powell & Sons for years with nothing but great things to say! Great work, prompt delivery service, and friendly staff all around. Highly recommend!

An absolute pleasure to work with! Local business with excellent communication. Jerome was amazing, fast to respond, knowledgeable, and accommodating. I hired Jerome (owner) to deliver 42 cu. yds. of topsoil, then grade it, seed it, and cover with hay roll. Looks great, and I will have a new yard in a few months!!!

I was looking forward to doing business after reading such positive reviews and seeing that this business is based in Detroit. I had our staffer order gravel from Powell & Son to fill in some ruts in alleys behind some houses we own in Detroit. She told them what it was for. When it was delivered, it was pea gravel. Unfortunately, when you drive on pea gravel, it shifts, making it so that it just leaves a track. The young woman we dealt with was both courteous and professional, but she wasn't able to help us. We relied on her judgement to set us up with the right kind of gravel, indicating what application we had in mind. She gave us pea gravel, instead of something along the lines of crushed concrete or crushed limestone, which would have been more appropriate. When we called them back to give them an opportunity to make this right, all they offered was a 10% discount on placing a new order, which just put the burden back on us. Unfortunately, we now have to figure out how to get rid of this gravel, then find a company that is willing to do it right.
